Houghton & Wyton Bowls Club was founded in 1964 and is now entering its 56th year on its site on the Village Sports Field. The ground is let from the Parish Council but the upkeep and improvements are maintained and developed by volunteers of the Club or professional companies if needed and funded by monies raised from fees and the many social events run by the membership. We share the Sports Pavilion which has changing rooms, a fitted kitchen and hall, with other sports clubs on the ground.
Membership is open to adults and juniors (9-18) who live in H&W and the surrounding towns and villages. Application forms for membership, club competitions and team selection under Join Us page. Since 2017 we have run curriculum lessons on Tuesday mornings from 09.30-10.30 for the Houghton Primary School with Year 5 attending pre-Half Term followed by Year 6 after Half Term. Unfortunately logistics has prevented Wyton on the Hill Primary School from taking up our offer which we regret but we now reach around 30 children per week. This has lead to the keen ones coming to the Friday Club Night and playing in Friendlies. We have a dedicated Junior Section, see under Join Us, with information regarding the annual Junior Singles Competition and continue to hope we can encourage enough juniors to enable us to enter a Junior Triples team into the County U18 Junior League, open to any child up to 18 years of age.
As an outdoor club our season runs from mid-April to early September. We have several teams which are entered into local men’s, women’s and mixed leagues as well as playing friendlies against other local clubs. To ensure that we can offer every member wishing to play in teams more matches we have added a third team to the Millicent Childs Over 60’s League. We are affiliated to both the men’s and women’s County and National Bowls Association (EBA) and Federation (EBF/EWBF) which means members can enter county competitions and potentially be selected for county teams, see Knowledge for explanation of EBA and EBF Laws of the Game.
We run a social Friday Club from 18.00 which is proving popular for young and old, members and non-members. Non-members pay £2.50/session and juniors £1. After play hot drinks & biscuits are provided, some bring nibbles and the bar is open. There are weekly roll-ups to learn or improve your technique following the School session on Tuesday mornings from 10-30, again with refreshments and same non-members fee of £2.50. All these sessions are great for getting to know each other along with further social ‘non-bowls’ events running throughout the year, see News for latest information and our Members page/Social Events for fuller information of our functions.
We have 5 Level 1 coaches and 1 Level 2 who attended courses run by the Bowls Development Association (BDA) with 2 coaches holding the Enhanced Certificate (DBS) as sports coaches for children and vulnerable adults. As a club we follow the Safeguarding Bowls policies of the BDA which can be found at:
